GROUNDS: Bed-Stuy
A Place. A People. A Longer Story.
Bedford-Stuyvesant is more than a backdrop for famous names. GROUNDS: Bed-Stuy follows the neighborhood as a living system — shaped by migration, housing, transit, churches, schools, businesses, block culture, music, policing, disinvestment, survival, ownership, redevelopment, and memory.
The book keeps the Ground at the center. It traces how people built community across generations, how institutions and policy changed the streets around them, how culture moved outward from Bed-Stuy, and how the neighborhood continued changing after the stories most often told about it ended.
Eric J. Finkley writes from lived connection while keeping memory and documentary evidence distinct. The result is not a postcard, a mythology, or a single claim about what Bed-Stuy was. It is a longer story about place: who shaped it, what shaped them, what was lost, what remained, and what the Ground still carries.
